Research Interests

Barbara Hayford received her PhD from the University of Kansas in Entomology where she worked on EPA funded projects and on a systematic revision of Paratendipes. She served as part of the ANSP Catherwood Expedition to Lake Hövsgöl, Mongolia in 1995 and 1997. After earning her degree, Barbara served as the Assistant Director of the Central Plains Center for Biological Assessment before taking a tenure track position in the Nebraska State College System (Wayne State College and Chadron State College). During her time in Nebraska, she continued her work with the Academy of Natural Sciences, Drexel University on NSF funded research documenting and describing diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates in Mongolia (2003-2006, 2008-2012) with Jon Gelhaus, John Morse, and Riley Nelson. She worked with her Mongolian colleagues Munkho Gotov and Tsooj Dashtogtokh on chironomid sampling and identification during these projects and used funds to train undergraduate researchers in Nebraska. More recently, she participated in the MACRORivers project and went on to work as a production taxonomist for Rhithron Associates, Inc. and Aquatic Biology Associates specializing in chironomid taxonomy.
