Although most habitat modifications for brook trout have focused on summer dynamics, winter dynamics may also play a significant role in the growth and sustainability of brook trout populations. I am interested in how summer improvements to trout stream habitats and riparian areas may affect winter emerging aquatic insect populations which serve as the primary food resource for trout in winter. My research interests also focus on the use of aquatic insects, specifically from the family Chironomidae, as bioindicators of stream condition. Research results will be helpful in continuing to shape habitat restoration and conservation efforts of Minnesota brook trout.
